Will the farmer as a job disappear in the next 20 years? As technology develops, there will be jobs that have decreased interest; one of them is the farmer. Every year, the number of farmers in Indonesia is falling off. In 2019, there are around 34.58 million farmers. In the next year, the number decreased to 33.4 million. The young generation have to keep the farmer survive. However, many of them do not want to be the farmer because it is not interesting. The farmer is the least interesting job because of the tiring work, small income, and low prestige.
The young generation does not want to be the farmer because it can be very tiring. There are many physical activities that farmers should do that make them fatigue. It is partly because the farmer does all the activities manually with little or no technology to help the work he does, and even with the little technology he has, he still needs a long time to finish his activities. In addition, a lot of work is done outdoors where the fields or rice fields are. Not only outdoor but this job is also dirty because it is done on the fields which are full of mud and/or soil. For example, planting rice is done in rice fields and the rice is planted in an orderly manner so that there is no competition between the rice. It means that the farmer has to spend a lot of time doing many works and he can have sunburn too. Therefore, the job as a farmer is not interesting, since the youth prefer to work indoors, which is clean, and does not need them to use a lot of energy.
The next reason for the young people to dislike becoming a farmer is because it has a small income. Choosing a job also needs us to think about income. It is the first aspect the young generation consider in choosing a job. Money is important because we cannot buy something without it. However, the farmer needs a lot of money to prepare for plantings, such as for seeds and petrol for tractors. Talking about preparation costs, the farmer also needs money to take care of the plants. It means he spends a lot of money only on preparation. It does not include taxes or anything else. Besides, farmers' income depends on the number of crops, while each crop has a different cultivation period. This is what makes farmers’ income irregular each month. Because of that, it is hard for farmers to get extra money for living costs. In addition, industrial progress turns agricultural land into land for manufacturing factories. It means that farmers have less land to cultivate food on and get income from.
The last reason is the farmer has a low prestige that makes the young generation not interested. The old generation make so much stigma that farmer is not prestigious. It can make young generations need to think more deeply because they want to make their parents proud. They also want to become parents’ pride. So, they want to become rich people. If they can be rich persons, their parents will show off that their kids are already successful. The example of adults’ stigma is if you become a farmer, you will be poor because farmer has low income. Therefore, many of them who are influenced by that stigma do not want their children to choose a job as the farmer. So, they fear that if they become a farmer, they will become poor and have bad future. In the end, they hesitate to go deep into this field. In addition, the farmer has a workplace which is dirty and remote. The fields or rice fields are usually in the village which is far from the city and not modern or fancy. The youth like to work in the office which is cool and has a fancy appearance. However, the farmer has non fancy appearance.
In brief, the young generations do not want to become a farmer because of the tiring work, low income, and low prestige. However, if farmers were no longer around, we would be worried because farmers produce the food that we eat every day. So, the government should give farmer facilities or rights, such as, giving subsidies for financing many things, such as technology, seeds, plant care, etc. So, let us preserve the farmer to prevent a food crisis together.
